Rutledge Road – A Timeless Waterfront Landscape

A multi-phase design blending natural stonework, native planting, and practical access on a forested slope.

The Rutledge Road Project is a thoughtful, multi-phase waterfront landscape designed to improve access, usability, and environmental resilience on a naturally sloped property. Beginning with the installation of imported limestone steps to create a safe and stable path down to the waterfront, each phase carefully addressed a unique need—from functional winter access for clients to connecting the front and rear of the property with a continuous interlock walkway. The final layout embraces a soft, curving design language that stands apart from today’s typical square-cut style, creating a more natural and timeless aesthetic.

Throughout the project, special attention was given to working with the land rather than against it. Rather than overbuilding with excess steps, the design respects the site's contours, ensuring accessibility without complicating maintenance. Native plantings were reintroduced along the slope to help re-establish vegetation, prevent erosion, and visually tie the hardscape into the surrounding environment. From the rustic limestone staircases to the elegant, flowing paver paths, the finished landscape not only offers practical movement but also reflects a quiet harmony between structure and nature—ideal for a waterfront lifestyle.
